Anybody who’s been to southeast Asia has seen uniquely styled statues carved with unbelievable thoroughness depicting various dragons, gods and demons. The tradition of carving goes back for centuries in Bali. The trees growing here are especially suitable for making statues and furniture and local masters know exactly which kind of tree is good for what. The knowledge of this craft as well as that of patterns used is inherited from father to son. Whole villages of craftsmen exist in which every man is engaged in carving. Female members of the family help to sand down and enamel the carvings while others weave mats. Usually children also do their part. After school, boys help their fathers and girls help their mothers. The sculptures reach shops in Europe and north America through Dutch mediation but we can find the most beautiful pieces and the widest range of goods here on this spot and of course prices are also the most favorable here.
