Host: Winter season’s just around the corner and it’s almost time to hit the slopes so we brought back our very good friend Gabe Saglie, he’s the senior editor of Travelzoo.com, the online guide to the world’s best travel deals and Gabe is here with some really sweet deals for all those snow bunnies out there because it’s time to get out there right? The powder vacations? Gabe: It is that time of year, a lot of these destinations have so much more going on that you don’t even have to strap on the skis. Host: So we’re going to talk about some of the top locations here. One of the hot destinations for winter is Lake Tahoe so what’s so special about it this time of year? Gabe: Lake Tahoe’s right there in the border between California, northern California and Nevada. They hosted the winter Olympics back in 1960. There’re seven different ski venues as part of Lake Tahoe, Heavenly, North Star, Kirkwood, Squaw Valley. Heavenly is definitely one of the more popular ones. They had the largest snowmaking system on the west coast. So no matter what the weather decides to do, there will be snow on the ground. And this is the destination that we’ve got lots of casinos, great restaurants, sleigh rides, snowmobiling, snowshoeing so again, if you’re not an avid skier, great place to go. And great places to stay, one of my favorites of which is the resort at Squaw Creek, four diamond property. In and out ski privileges and for $129 a night, they’re got a special through December that includes your valet parking. It includes breakfast daily so they could throw a couple of extras in to really kind of round out your ski experience. Host: And there are great spa treatments too. Gabe: Great spa, so that deal includes some spa discounts as well. Host: So New Mexico is also on your list too. Gabe: Taos New Mexico, I like this one because most people think Taos, New Mexico, the American southwest but there are two skiing venues here which are Angelfire and Taos Ski Valley, elevation of 12000 feet so you get snow up there and of course you go to the base of the mountain and even in winter, you get balmy weather so you get these temperature extremes. The Taos Ski Valley, beautiful European style village, excellent ski schools. If any of you have little kids you want to get them started learning early, great ski schools, also a great get away for couples, great southwestern cuisine, arts, going on there so—and usually an affordable place to go compared to some of the more popular destinations in Colorado and Utah. Host: Right now a popular destination in the northeast for skiing, New Hampshire. Gabe: Yes, Brenton Woods, yes, Brenton Woods is again for the northeast, one of the more popular destinations. I think it’s two or three hours from Boston, about five and a half hour drive from New York City. So you can make it a two or three day getaway and it’s great for families, gentle slopes, lots of cross-country skiing so for families, a really great getaway. Host: And we ran out of time but Salt Lake City is also on your list too. Gabe: Yes, Park City, Alta, Snowbird, beautiful. Host: I’m going to see you out there. Thank you so much Gabe. Gabe: Alright, see you on the slopes.
