Bob: Hi! I’m Bob from Pittsburg. And I’d like to know why women lived longer than men? Eric Rodriguez: Bob, you’re wondering about something many of us, short lived, half of the species wonder about. Which is why women outlive us on the whole? I’ve got to believe there’s something biologic that does it. I don’t think it can be attributed simply to the fact that men take risks in their lives, especially earlier in their lives that shorten their life expectancy. There may be a component then of violence and suicide and drugs and alcohol, et cetera that takes out some men. But that factor does not account for the differential in life expectancy, the six or seven year’s difference. So, I think women are gifted with some kind of biologic superiority, unfortunately, that enables them to live longer. And they live longer despite the fact that they incur their own kinds of risks. Childbirth used to be a high risk activity. It’s no longer as risky as it was. But even with that, women still outlived us. So, I think you have to be happy with the gender you’ve been endowed with and enjoy it for all its worth and do the best you can with what you’ve got.
