Why Miscarriage Is Referred to as an Abortion For most patients it’s pretty confusing to hear their doctor refer to their miscarriage as an abortion. In medicine we refer to early pregnancy loss as an abortion. Early pregnancy loss can then be further differentiated into intentional versus unintentional and miscarriage is unintentional loss of a pregnancy. And so for most patients and for some clinicians we try to refer to those circumstances as a miscarriage. I think that that philosophy comes from the phrase, well, if there’s something wrong with the baby, better for you to lose the baby now, right? But in essence, a miscarriage is never a good experience. So I’d have to say it’s never good.
