Whether Lactose Intolerance Is Reversible Steve: My name is Steve from Wall, New Jersey. I am lactose intolerance and I was wondering if it’s possible for me to become lactose tolerant. Satish Rao: Steve, if you are lactose intolerant it is unlikely that you will become tolerant of lactose products as your life moves on. Most of us who acquire this condition in adulthood will live with this for the rest of our lives. That is an exception however. If your lactose intolerance is because of another underlying GI disease such as celiac disease or you’ve had about a gastroenteritis or some infection in your GERD that has let to a temporary loss of lactose enzyme then you may regain the ability to digest lactose products but that’s rare.
