When You Should Call a Pediatrician About Child Constipation Brent: Hi, my name is Brent from Orlando Florida. Good morning, what is the longest period of time a toddler can go without having a bowel movement before it becomes a medical issue? Terri Mcfadden: Brent, constipation is when a child has difficulty or pain when having a stool or a bowel movement. This is actually a common problem in childhood. Also, constipation is when a child goes for several days without having a bowel movement. And we usually think of three days as being the time when we worry that they maybe constipated. It’s okay for a parent to go ahead and make some modifications in the diet when they believe their child is constipated. Some of the most common causes are not having enough fiber or not having fluid in the diet. So for the average child if you add more fresh food and vegetables and brand containing foods then constipation usually abates and there’s no need to get your pediatrician involved. However, if you’re child goes more than three days after you’ve made your intervention and they’re still constipated it’s time to talk with your pediatrician.
