P. Mona Khanna: Surgery is scarier for children than adults primarily because of the fear of separation from parents. If a child is going to have surgery, you should become familiar with the process of separation. Sometimes parents can stay with the child until he or she slept and then be with the child again when he or she wakes up after the operation. The question of how much you tell your child about the surgery often comes up that’s usually left up to the parents completely. Anesthesia has never been safe for kids that it is today but parents should be certain to meet with the anesthesiologist to get all of there questions answered.
