What is In Vitro Fertilization? Dr.John Schnorr: In Latin vitro means “glass” so it's in glass fertilization, so we’re going to take eggs out, we’re going to fertilize them in a glass tube with sperm and then we’re going to take these embryos and later put them back in to the uterus. And so that’s a process which is a more sophisticated form of treatment, which bypasses blocked fallopian tubes, fix severe sperm counts, it fixes endometriosis and a lot of common causes of infertility. And IVF is done by giving a woman injectable medications, over a period of three to four weeks, watching the eggs being made in the ovary, typically 10 to 15 eggs will be made in one IVF cycle. We’ll give her anesthesia, so she is asleep and then do a small surgical procedure, where we use a needle that will go in and take all the eggs off of the ovary and put the eggs into the glass test tube, we’ll then take the sperm, put it on top of the eggs to make embryos. We’ll grow the embryos in the lab for a couple of days, and then take the two best embryos and put those two best embryos back into the uterus. In the other embryos that are made can be frozen and save for a later date to help you impregnated again if you want to try again. Every time you put two embryos into the uterus for a typical patient who is 35 years of age or less should have about a 5%-60% chance of pregnancy per try of putting two embryos into the uterus with IVF.
