As the industrial revolution gained steam, so too did the millionaires who prospered from. Wealthy New Yorkers built their summer mansions along the block of Newport Belleview District, creating another collection of vintage architecture of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Tourism is now the community’s most significant contribution. There are hundreds of shops and restaurants along the waterfront district. Here too the oldest synagogue in the United States. Just down the street, Saint Mary’s where John F. Kennedy and Jacqueline Lee Bouvier were married. America’s first naval college began here and was later moved to Minneapolis. Artists hit a variety of different discipline that found Newport a stimulating environment to practice their art of craft, stone carving, and a lost art in America can be found here.
