Visit Block Island in Rhode Island In southern Rhode Island, one of the busiest fishing ports in the state - Lake. Lobster, clams and a variety of fish keep fisherman occupied throughout the season. Of equal importance to the port, ferry traffic to Block Island just a few miles of shore. The island lifeblood is the ferry service which brings everything from tourist to turnips to the island. Population on Block Island dwells from 950 or so, permanent year round residence at 15,000 or so in the summer. A constant ever changing flood of tourists arrives by ferry all day during December months. It’s an amazing mask of humanity filling island, road, hotels and beaches. Seven mile along crescent beach is a social gathering of Olympic proportions where thousands of sand and water worshipers need everyday during the season. There’s another seven or eight miles of sand all around the island scattered smaller secluded beaches for those who want to get away from the crowds. Rich in history, the island’s been a getaway since the mid 1800’s but some of their original historic inn’s and hotel’s still on business. The largest of which is the spring house which opened in 1825. Though some cars arrive by ferry, most people get around the island on bicycle or on foot. The island two harbors are popular destinations for New England boaters. There’s two harbors on Block Island, New harbor and Old harbor this is called the Great Salt pond. Old harbor is where the majority of the ferries come in. This harbor is about 620, 630 acres, it’s pretty big harbor. The big destination in New England, one of the best destinations and this harbor is pretty much for three months. We got a lot going on here it’s a big recreational Harbor, Shell fishing is very popular out there, where able to manage shellfish population at—we stand a hardest thing every year. This is one of the cleanest harbors in New England if not the cleanest, it’s actually a great harbor to swim and it’s crystal clear water. It’s pretty unique for New England. The island has done well in setting aside a lot of land for conservation and protection so it’s not going to be overdeveloped. Over 40 percent of the island is protected which is as far the island’s go, Island communities and I will insists that’s good. Yup, looks like little blues. Yup, little blue fish coming fair in New England. To the harbor blue, it’s small, great fun for kid though, a lot of fun for kids. This is actually—if you ever going to keep a fish a blue fish, this is a great size of it because it’s not as oily. Another guy that of my shop, Greg knows he is actually a good chef too and he lives in the house which is great, we had fried Blue fish the other night which is—no one would think of frying Blue Fish would be great. Just deep fry it fresh, fantastic. Block Island’s lighthouses are famous and popular among visitors. The classic and unique 1883 southeast light was moved back from a receiving block about ten years ago. An engineering challenge, not one window broken or a brick popped during the move, a State small in size but rich in history, texture, culture and color.
