Using Toothpaste as Acne Remedy Chris: Good morning this Chris from Brooklyn, New York. I was wondering is toothpaste a good substitute for nightly pimple cream and if so, why? Dermatologist: Ah Chris I am actually surprised that the number of patients that come to me would —about toothpaste as a therapy that was recommended to them as a common home therapy for acne. To be honest I can not say that there is much evidence in the medical literature that supports toothpaste as a treatment and when I look at the ingredients of toothpaste I can not see anything in there specifically that you know would be effective as an anti acne therapy. So while I know that it is a common thing that is listed on the internet as a home remedy and other therapies that are listed as home remedies are applying garlic or lemons or ice to acne regions. I can not say that they have a lot of scientific evidence behind them. I do not necessarily think you can do any harm by applying toothpaste but I do not know if any evidence that exists has suggest that it is an effective therapy.
