A 17-year-old in China sold one of his kidneys and decided to buy an iPhone and iPad with the proceeds. Several defendants have gone on trial accused of “intentional injury and illegal organ trading”. The kidney was removed in April of 2011, and the teenager was left with severe injuries including renal failure. Even more shocking, one of the accomplices who performed the operation is a surgeon. The boy’s mother denies he sold the kidney to buy the gadgets. She stated in court, “My son was tempted by the illegal organ traders and might have been afraid of getting caught with such a large amount of money, so he bought a cell phone and a tablet PC.” Also in 2011, a man sold his kidney for more than $19,000. He spent the acquired money on an engagement ring only to be dumped by his fiancée.
