Grab a cold one and let's explore how one of the world's most popular beverages came about.Beer is thought to be the first alcoholic drink..ever.Although it is hard to pinpoint an exact date, researchers believe that beer dates back to the days of cereal agriculture, around 10,000 BC. The early days of beer can be traced back to ancient Mesopotamia, in southwest Asia.A farmer tasted water, in which bread had been residing for at least a full day. The bread happened to mix with the liquid, created a pulp-like substance which had fermented. So if it weren't for the farmer who was brave enough to gulp bread-infested water, you would have never known about this magical elixir.The first brews were initially mixtures of crushed grains that were heated and submerged in water. Ancient pottery jars have been tested from western Iran, revealing that beer was indeed produced in the area. In 3500 BC, the first recorded evidence of brewing was left on clay tablets by Sumerians in the epic of Gilgamesh. Those tablets revealed that the majority of brewers were women. Ancient Egyptians were highly regarded for their beers and the brewing phenomenon soon spread to the Greeks. Every culture had their pet grain. Africans would often use maize, while the Chinese preferred wheat. The Japanese utilized rice and Egyptians stuck with barley. As centuries passed, the tradition of brewing grew until the first canned beer was sold by the Virginia-based, Krueger Brewing Company in 1935.
