Dr. Thomas McElrath of the Maternal-Fetal Medicine department at Brigham and Women’s Hospital answers the question, “Do children display lasting effects from preterm birth?” He says they can. Certainly the babies who are born 24-28 weeks have a higher chance of neurological conditions, movement disorders, cerebral palsy, blindness and may have trouble living independently. It is different in every situation because it is hard to tell how a baby will react and who that baby will become.
