Hood or no hood, in my opinion, I like to leave the top of the aquarium open. This allows for exchanges of gasses on the main tank. Open tanks do have more evaporation which you then replace with fresh or old water. Evaporation has a cooling effect which is especially important if you are running metal halogens. In a quarantined tank, it is not a bad idea to have a hood. Fishes are most likely to jump out when they get into a new environment and don’t have a lot of places to hide. So, I like a hood for the quarantine tank and open for the main tank. What if your fish jump out of the tank? Just go to your hardware store and get one half inch lighting grids. These grids are small enough not to allow fish to jump, large enough to allow some exchanges of gasses and evaporation to occur. Just cut them to the size yourself allowing room for the returns back into the tank.
