The Pros and Cons of Circumcision Mark: Hi my name is Mark I am Somerville, Massachusetts and I am expecting a son so I am curious about the pros and cons of circumcision? Angelika: Hi Mark, officially the American Academy of Pediatrics actually does not recommend routine circumcision. However there is two ways to look at this, on the one hand circumcision does result in a small reduction in the risk of urinary tract infections and also a small reduction in the risk of future STD transmission. There is also a reduction in the risk of complications to the penis. However the risks are so small to any of these that most insurance companies actually don’t pay for circumcisions. On the other hand parents who want their child circumcised for example because the father is circumcised. That is a very personal preference and if you decide you want to have your son circumcised it is really up to you.
