The Link Between Mercury Vaccines and Autism Bob: Hi, my name is Bob. I'm from Atlanta, Georgia. I know that mercury is used in some vaccines and it's a neurotoxin. So my question is, is there any link between specific vaccines and autism? Daniel Geschwind: Bob, you asked a very controversial question. The science out there in the research has clearly shown across many countries and many studies that there is no association of vaccines and mercury within vaccines with autism. From the scientific standpoint, that theory has been totally discredited yet is still is out there. Part of this maybe that mercury is probably not a great thing to have in vaccines and shouldn’t be there but it is not causing an epidemic of autism. That doesn’t mean that it might not affect in individual child here and there because epidemiologic studies don’t look at the individual but on a population basis, there is no evidence. In fact the evidence is contrary to any association between mercury containing vaccines and autism.
