Hi everybody! I'm Melanie Raposo and welcome to Mommy's Minute. Babies grow so fast. In a baby's first year alone, it will triplet its birth weight. So how important is birth weight exactly? Well, most newborns weigh between 6 to 9 pounds and they are usually 19 to 21 inches long. Babies who are growing well are usually considered to be quite healthy. Babies born under 3 pounds are considered to be very low birth weigh. These are usually premature babies and multiple births. There are other things that can cause low birth weigh are: teen pregnancy for example, mothers who are in poor health and also race plays a factor in determining birth weight. In the United States, African-American women are twice as likely as than Caucasian women to give birth to a tiny baby. It's also important to monitor the weight of your baby to ensure that they're healthy and growing normally. Remember, not to worry if you have a low weight baby because many low weight and high weight babies grow up to be very healthy, normal sized adults.
