Dr. Rene Hackney explains some tips on how to give your children verbal directions, and why it's better to give few directions rather than many
Host: Why is it better to give few directions rather than many? Dr. Rene Hackney: When you give directions at a time, children often get lost. If you're giving a 3-year-old, seven or eight directions, they may not be able to remember or they may not be able to sequence the things that they need to keep in order. So it's breaking down your directions into smaller parts and giving children something more manageable to be able to follow. It's less frustrating for everyone. The child is actually able to do the task and the parent is less frustrated that the child isn't listening.
