Eugenia: Hi! This is Eugenia from Los Angeles, California. I am 28 years old. I am a smoker. I have a question for the doctors; I want to know the available non-drug treatment for COPD. Robert Wise: Eugenia, there are number of treatments we have for COPD beyond just taking medication. First of all, quitting smoking is important and that's the mainstay of treatment. Obviously, regular exercise is important and this can be done either in a rehabilitation program or with a self-directed exercise program. In patients who have low oxygen levels in their blood, using oxygen at rest or during exercise is important not only in improving the capacity to do exercise but also, in terms of extending life expectancy. Finally, in people who have very advanced COPD, certain surgical procedures may be tried such as Lung volume reduction surgery in selected patients or lung transplantation.
