Todd: Hey, I’m Todd Davis. Today’s OYH homeowner is a super mom who’s tried to create the ideal kitchen for her young family. Meet Lea Peneses and her husband, David Connelly of Thousand Oaks, California. Lea: So you saw this really is white tile and white tile as you could suspect with four children and ages two to seven was a horrendous feat for me. I was probably cleaning my tile three, four times a day. I opted to tear out the tile all on my own. Todd: You did all that with four kids underfoot? I’m impressed. Lea: I’ve changed out the garbage disposal, not an easy task. I’ve started to sand my cabinets. I’m not really crazy about this honey lacquer on there. Just doing one of them took me forever. Todd: And why isn’t your husband sanding with you? David: With me working 65 to 70 hours a week it’s just an awful lot for her to take on, on her own. Lea: I have done so much here on my own and I feel like there’s so much more to do. Todd: I can’t believe you got this far. Tell me a bit more about these cabinets, so you started sanding these and then what happened? Lea: I ran into some issues. It’s a lot harder than I thought it was actually going to be. You know they have a beveled edge on them and those you have to do by hand. So in order for me to do 22 cabinets and hand sand the edges and the bevel is going to take me a long, long time by myself. Todd: Is there something that you would like to see differently done on the counter top? Lea: By getting the grouts, I’d like to get rid of the grout completely. Todd: As long as you’re doing that, we’ll go ahead and do a back splash as well and we might as well switch off the sink. David: Basically, I’ll be the first to admit I’m not great at this—I’m not a real handyman, put it that way. It’s not my forte. Todd: Don’t worry, David. We specialize in forte. We’ll replace the old tile countertop with concrete to match the floor. Then we’ll sand, strip and stain the cabinets to lighten them up. Finally, we’ll accent everything with new hardware, faucets and a new sink. Lea Connelly’s kitchen is now sleek and modern. But just a few days ago, it was old and ugly. One, two, three, welcome to your new kitchen. David Wow. Oooh, well. Wow that’s great. Oh this is fabulous. Catch on, baby because I love it, God. Lea: It’s totally transformed. I’d like just when I walked in right now, it’s like wow, that’s not the same kitchen it was just five years ago. Todd: New countertops, cabinets David: I love the colors like this like cappuccino and it ties in with the sink and then I loved it all of it like the hardware here. This is beautiful with the copper, it really ties in to the floor you want too. I love like the whole conversion of it. Todd: The cabinets, they were just the honey colored, they had the kid scratches all over them. So we had to re-sand those and we ended up putting a white wash seal on those. David: I’m completely surprised. I had no idea it would look so good. I mean, it looks like we just got a brand new kitchen. I mean, no one would know even that these were the previous cabinets. Todd: And look at the sink, that’s hard core. David: I know, yeah, you can throw kids into that thing it’s like almost like a bath. Lea: Just look like a farmhouse sink you know mixed with this like industrial countertop. That’s kind of neat, I like that. You can really always take your dishes and force in everything and throw it into the garbage disposal. I love it. Todd: Now you’re talking, connected to a turbo charged GFTI approved garbage disposal. Leah: I think I’m going to take a little bit of a break because that was a lot and a very short period of time but I think I do have a lot more knowledge in the next project that I take on.
