Spot the Tot - Child Safety Program Host: Accidents are the leading cause of death for children. And some of the most common and preventable tragedies happen in and around automobiles. Wes Bender: The heat in cars, cars moving any car moving is not safe for a child to be around. The trunk like I said it can be a trap. Each of those areas poses as significant risks. Host: For 10 years, Safe Kids Worldwide and General Motors have been working to educate parents about proper child safety seat use. Now, they are working to expand awareness to potential dangers in and around vehicles. Wes Bender: For whatever reasons, many reasons kids are attracted to cars. I mean they want to play in the car, they want to play around the car and there are just a lot of things that are dangerous that parents sometimes overlook and don’t realize. Spot for Tot is a program that Safe Kids Worldwide, General Motors and Chevrolet had developed to create the awareness and the emphasis on safety in and around cars. Host: One of the most tragic and preventable accident is when a driver doesn’t see a child playing behind the vehicle as he or she is backing up. Karen Morley: This child is 16 feet away from the bumper of this vehicle, but I still could not see him from the mirrors in the vehicle. That’s why it’s so very important that you get out of the vehicle and do a walk around and a visual check for children and other objects prior to getting in the vehicle, adjusting your mirrors and driving away. Host: Just 30 seconds of extra caution can be a life saver.
