See the Gay Pride Parade in Toronto The Gay Pride Parade annually converts downtown Toronto into a world renowned rainbow of festivities with participants from all walks of life. A portion of Young Street is closed to accommodate the parade that is grown into a large and colorful Maine Stream celebration. Gay pride began unofficially in 1971 drawing 100 people. By 1998 crowds of more than 500,000 people were attending the celebration making it one of Toronto’s largest cultural festivals and among the three largest gay pride events in the world. These days nearly a million people can be found mingling through the parade, some of them just out of curiosity. The city observes gay pride week around the parade that was created by gay bisexual and transsexual people to feel comfortable making their orientation public.
