Russian ice hockey player Dmitry Uchaykin died on Monday (April 1) after being hit on the head while playing for Kazakhstan side Ertis Pavlodar two days earlier. Uchaykin was hit to the head in the league semi final play-off match between his team Ertis Pavlodar and visiting Arystan Temirtau on Saturday. Midway through the game, he was knocked out by a high hit from Arystan's Lithuanian player Donatas Kumeliuskas.

Uchaykin was hit to the head in the league semi final play-off match between his team Ertis Pavlodar and visiting Arystan Temirtau on Saturday. Midway through the game, he was knocked out by a high hit from Arystan's Lithuanian player Donatas Kumeliuskas. Local media reported that Uchaykin was able to walk off the ice by himself and even drove home, but was rushed to hospital the next day when he felt worse and lapsed into a coma. He died of brain hemorrhage in the early hours on Monday. The club fans went o the ice hockey arena to lay flowers in front of Uchaykin's portrait. "It is a big loss for all of us, but first of all for the family.. Everybody took it quite bad, such a big a loss. We just need to hold on. (SIGHS) Dima was our friend, a fighter. We will remember...," Uchaykin's teammate Denis Klemeshov told reporters, but was not able to finish the sentence and walked away in tears. Kazakhstan's ice hockey federation cancelled all remaining play-off games until further notice.
