Hi, everybody! I am Melanie Raposo and welcome to Mommy's Minute. Group B Strep or GBS infection is an infection that 15% to 40% of healthy adult women carry in their vagina or rectal areas. Because GBS has no symptoms, many pregnant women carry it unaware of the serious dangers it poses to their newborn. GBS infection is the number one cause of life-threatening infections in newborns. It is carried through the bloodstream and can cause death, mental retardation, and other serious diseases.
