Janae: Hi! I'm Janae from Dallas and I was wondering, what is the appropriate age to leave children at home alone? Shari Barkin: Hi! Janae, leaving your children at home is frightening; it's a scary experience as a parent. And I recommend that your child is in early adolescence that means between 11 and 13. Before leaving them at home, give them a trial run. So give them some scenarios, some things that they would have to work out. What would they do if there was a knock on the door? What would they do if somebody called and they didn't know who it was? What would they do if they were afraid or if somebody was hurt? And once you feel confident in their answers and their responses then it's okay to leave them at home, but not for too long and check in.
