watchmojo.com The championship series of major league baseball is the World Series. The World Series is held between the American League Champion and the National League Champion. It is traditionally the best of 7 play-off series. Since 2003, the winner of the Mid Season All-Star game receives home field advantage in the World Series. In exception to 1904 in 1994 the World Series has been held annually since 1903. In 1904 the NL’s New York Giants owner refused to allow its team to play setting up the American League was to inferior. In 1994 the World Series was not played due to a baseball strike. Because major league baseball features only teams from North America it seems incorrect to label it the World Series. However when the championship playoff series was named it was back when North America was the only continent with a major baseball league in the world. The winning team of the World Series is awarded the Commissioner’s Trophy. The trophy is designed with 30 flags to represent the 30 teams in the league. In 1967 the first time the Commissioner’s Trophy was awarded, it was to the St. Louis Cardinals who defeated the Boston Red Sox. Major League baseball is the only major American Sports League that has it’s major trophy not named after a person.
