We all talk about doing something about the environment, but isn't it great when you learn the there are people out there DOING something about it? Our gardening expert P. Allen Smith visits the Windy City and shows us a rooftop gardens

Allen: This is Chicago and not to long ago environmentalist frond on the windy city but that is all changing. Just take a look around can you believe it were 12 stories above traffic in the middle of 20,000 square feet of garden. Male: We got so many black tire roofs in cities and so many ash falls surfaces that w made cities hotter. By making them hotter we also increase there pollution. Mayor Dailies is really kind a roll up his leaves and try to figure out how local cities can do something about that air quality problem at the same time they beautify the city. So city hall roof is his idea and one of a number of projects going on throughout the city of Chicago to reduce what is called the urban heat island by putting this roof top garden on top of the roof will be able to cut energy cost in city hall. Both cooling in the summer and heating in the winter by over $4,000.00 a year and we are going to be able this roof last at least twice this long. Because the soil on top of it protects the underline roof from ultraviolet rays cause deterioration. Allen: Yes deterioration. Male: Was not be a nice place to stroll on? Allen: Absolutely all of the tenants around here will be able to enjoy this patch of green. Male: Yes, it is amazing you got an entire neighborhood or cities up there looking down on roofs throughout the city and it is really a great place to create some green space.
