Male: Home improvement is tough work. Sometimes, it’s too touch for home owners to do it themselves. Female: This is a multi functioning space and I need pieces that won't necessarily be able to find in stores. We don’t have time to do this ourselves. Male: Today’s problem the Jones family needs a place to eat, play, do homework and spend time together. But their small outdated family room has limited storage and isn’t functioning for this family on any level. Female: Everything butts heads. Male: But that’s where my team and I come in. Since organization is key for this room, I get Jake started on huge project. While Jake gets started, I can begin working on the island that will act as a dining table and prep area. The base has several cubbies and a large drawer for more storage. The reason I want to grab you because you can see this piece taking shape. But I want you to help me build what is going to be your brand new island. I’m going to give you this nail gun. Female: I get a power tool? Male: Yes, you do so right off the bat, I want you to fire in right in this line which is the center mark, I want you to fire right up top. First, we’ll glue and nail the partitions in and then secure a bottom plate which gives the piece stability. This is how it’s going to sit and of course, you have your different cubbies up here for storage, you have a huge drawer down here but up top, that’s your eating and prepping area. We’re going to make a huge table up there. Now the next step is to paint the entire unit and then we’ll go ahead and we’ll come up with some trim to really give it that detail, that professional look. Let’s get to it. Candice, do you know what this is for? This my dear is going to be your brand new table. So what we’re going to do, we cut the end down first and we want all the grain to work with each other here. So these are the two end flaps that will then fold down and can extend when you have more people. So that way when they’re up, all the grain flows together. So the next step to do is actually put our edge bending on to cover up because it is still plywood and then we’ll put our finish coat in here and then you’ll have a brand new tabletop. Let’s get to the next step. The edge banding has adhesive on one side and it sticks by heating it with a small iron. Our island/dining room table will give Chris and Candice more prep and storage area. Plus it will give them a spot to eat dinner together as a family. Earlier, Candice helped me build a large drawer that will sit at the bottom of the unit creating lots of extra storage. Now Jake and I are installing it. That is beautiful. So now, they’re going to have so much storage with all of these cubbies up top and then a great big drawer down below that slides really nice. So the next step is put the tabletop on with the fold in flaps and then Jeannie will come back and put the upholstered panels inset and the space is ready to go. Jeannie’s working on some fabric panels that will go inside the cubbies of the island. Meanwhile, Jake and I are getting the piece in the room. Candice, Chris, what’s up. You guys ready for this? So are you nervous, excited, tell me. Female: Very excited all of it. Male: So everything above. Let’s go in, you guys waited long enough for your room to be done. It’s done, let’s go check it out. Female: My gosh. I’m kind of speechless. Male: That’s okay. Male: Thank you. Male: No problem. When we arrived, this family had no place to sit down and eat together so we created an island that serves more than one function. You needed a prep area so that’s why we made this island counter height. Of course, a lot of chairs and then the folding ends to make this bigger for a dining room table. Female: That’s neat. We could never eat as a family and this works. Finally. I’m excited.
