Kevin Costner Live with Modern West Rhiannon Ally: Kevin Costner lights up the screen with his eclectic collection of characters, from Lieutenant Dunbar in Dances with Wolves to Ray Kinsella in Field of Dreams. And his boyish good looks continue to capture audiences including on stage with his band, Modern West. We caught up at the Academy Award Winning Actor at the Country Thunder Music Festival in Florence, Arizona. Well we all have our favorite Kevin Costner movies and now you can add your favorite play list to the film stars’ resume. Kevin Costner: My wife actually was kind of started bugging me about playing music again live, and I told her, “Yeah, I did really want to.” And she found some of my old music and John’s old music. She keeps on saying, “I don’t know why you don’t play this because I think I really like and I think people would like it.” I mean it kind of like a kid who did not want to take out the garbage or mow the loan. I just kept putting that often. For three years, she said, “I think you should play live, wherever you’re making a movie because you love it that much.” I miss it doing five years ago. We started playing without any idea of where it would take us. There was no plan. They’re still releasing a plan and we started playing little things and it’s kind of led across the ocean, and it’s led right back here to John’s home turf. It’s been an interesting ride for us. Rhiannon Ally: John is John Coinman, who was a music supervisor for Kevin Costner’s award winning film, Dances with Wolves. Kevin Costner: So we met when we didn’t have a couple of nickels that rub between us. So then things begin to happen for me, and John and I met through mutual friends. We had an appreciation for each other and about what each others did. Then we started to collaborate musically. Rhiannon Ally: The Modern West just returned home after a successful European tour. Kevin Costner: Well we didn’t what’s going to be like that. I mean people can put anything they want retrospect. But we had no idea. They listen on songs that were purely story-oriented, very American for sure. And you know you put on an hour and a half concert. They don’t have one single song that they can tap their foot to that at least they know. So we didn’t know what to expect but we went over there and we played really loud. We played long, and people, you know halfway through were leaving their seats and coming to the stage. By the end of the tour, people were not waiting. They were just at the front. And it was successful for us. Whatever happens going forward, I’m always going to have that moment. No one can take that one away. Rhiannon Ally: Well everyone in the band write songs, making it a little tough to decide on what’s going into a set. Kevin Costner: We perform our original step. We like playing songs of our friends – some of them famous, some of them probably should be. We’ll do that, one or two songs. At the set tonight, we’ll probably play fourteen songs and we’ll play one song of somebody that I like and the rest would be ours. Rhiannon Ally: He never pushes for his music and movie though. Kevin Costner: I try not to show off anything. You know I try not to force anything in any medium. What it makes sense, and then we put some songs in swing vote, but it makes sense. I’ll leave the great scoring to those who are great scores. Rhiannon Ally: Next up for Kevin Costner and the Modern West. Kevin Costner: Oh, we have whacky was constant. Stop it. I was kind of close. You should have said I was warmed. I get that it’s not the state. Rhiannon Ally: For the Country Thunder Festival on Twin Lakes this July. Kevin Costner: We’ve had really great receptions in Wisconsin for a lot of different reasons. Hopefully, people just enjoy what we do. Rhiannon Ally: And guaranteed you’ll enjoy what they do.
