How Treatment of Bipolar Children Affects Their Schooling Jeff: Hi, my name is Jeff, I work for the city of Los Angeles. If my child has bipolar disorder, how can I seek help from the school? John Walkup: Jeff, I think the most important thing if your son has bipolar disorder is to make sure that he’s in treatment and that his treatment is maximized to offer him the most possible benefit he can get from treatment. There are children with bipolar disorder who went treated well can actually function within a normal classroom. On the other hand, our experience is that many children with bipolar disorder aren’t receiving optimal benefit from treatment and then have problems in school. So the first thing I would do is make sure that he’s in treatment and he’s getting the best treatment possible and that his functioning is maximized. Then if he continues to have educational issues there’s a procedure at the school by which you can get special services to provide additional support for him so that he can function within the classroom and do his best academically.
