How to Treat Fever You treat a fever in essence the same way for adults and children, from the very beginning before you get to medications. You should basically try to cool the body down as much as possible but not into obviously a very, very cold range. The best thing to do is to wear lightweight clothing or put your child in lightweight clothing, cover yourself with just a sheet; you don’t want to sweat out the fevers you might have heard in the past. In addition, you wan t to get into a lukewarm bath or shower to lower your body temperature without freezing yourself because you don’t wan to get in to very cold water as that can actually make you shiver which will increase your temperature as crazy as that sounds. As far as medications are concerned for adults, the best thing to do whereas anything really is over the counter that says antipyretic on it or anti fever. Those are things like Tylenol and the anti-inflammatory medication, the most common of which you’ll see is ibuprofen, and even aspirin is fine in adults. In children, Tylenol of ibuprofen are considered fine although ibuprofen under the age of six months, you would want to consult your pediatrician, the thing you want to remember about children is never ever use aspirin to treat a fever because it might lead to what we call Reye's syndrome which can be extremely dangerous
