How to Treat Dark Circles Under the Eyes Alyssa: Hi my name Alyssa I am from Bloomington, Indiana and I had noticed sometimes I get dark circles under my eyes. I am wondering why those are appearing and if there is anything I can do to prevent that? Dermatologist: Alyssa, dark circles under the eyes can be caused by a number of different factors. The most common cause of dark circles under the eyes is actually a result of nasal congestion. That causes a dilation of the veins in the area under the eyes which imparts that dark coloration. Chronic skin conditions can also do it as well interestingly lack of sleep is not a common cause of dark circles under the eyes. Therapy at treating it of course then is directed at what the underline cause is incase nasal congestion, decongestions or treatments that a way that congestion can help up improve the appearance of those dark circles.
