How to Talk to Your Daughter About Menstruation Jeff: My name is Jeff and from Nashville, Tennessee and my question is I'm a single father and how do I discuss with my 10-year-old daughter the process of having her first menstrual cycle. Nadine Kaslow: Jeff that’s a really challenging question. I think that it is really important for fathers to have an open and conversation with their daughters whether they're single parents or not about them having their menstrual cycle. I think that even though I know it could be awkward for fathers, the more comfortable you can come across as being the better off you and your daughter will be. Second of all I think you need to acknowledge that there's a lot about that you don’t personally about and that maybe you too can discover things together that you could for example read a book together about it and talk about it so you could learn together. Third, you want to help your daughter come up with people who might be able to assist her with some of the concrete realities of having her menstrual cycle whether that be an aunt or grandmother or her best friend’s mom or somebody who can be concretely helpful to her.
