Well, it is not really known if it is possible to prevent asthma. We know that asthma tends to run in families and that allergen exposure early in life and even infections early in life can affect asthma. There is research going on to determine whether allergen exposure or exposure to environmental smoke predisposes to the development of asthma and there is some indication that this is the case particularly with smoke. So one measure that families can take to reduce the development of asthma in their children is to stop smoking in the home and to eliminate all environmental smoke exposure for infants and young children.
