How to Reduce a Fever Angelina: Hi I'm Angelina from North Massapequa. Other than taking an aspirin, what’s the best way to reduce a fever? Bruce Polsky: Well Angelina, there are options other than aspirin for reducing a fever and the most common option that's used is a drug called Acetaminophen which is marketed under the trade name Tylenol and others as well but Tylenol is the one that you will recognized most to non-aspirin containing fever reducer. The other would be Ibuprofen which is marketed as Motrin, Advil and that works well also. The move-away from Aspirin has been related to Reye ’s Syndrome which is a disease in mostly in kids with viral illness but also the risk of other side effects from aspirin particularly bleeding problems because Aspirin inhibits platelet activity so people have moved away from Aspirin for that reason. In addition, Aspirin does cause gastritis, inflammation of the lining of the stomach which can potentially lead to bleeding. So for these reasons, the alternatives that I mentioned previously seemed to be preferred and safer today.
