Melanie Raposo: Hi everybody and I'm Melanie Raposo, and welcome to the pregnancy show, today we are talking about toddler accident prevention and what you can do to child proof your home. Now as far as accident prevention with toddlers is it basically the same things I mean what other things are we looking for? Maureen Mcllveen: Well we are we still looking of course at the, the safety of the home and again remember in this material the category of a child goes anywhere from one year of age up to 8 years of age. Where at this point of course you are certainly hoping that they are not putting shiny objects in to their mouths, but they are still general household safety, you know good maintenance of the home, clean clear well lit always the stair cases, no toys lying around, in appropriate places, caution with children of different age groups being in the same environment playing together. Melanie Raposo: Okay Maureen Mcllveen: If the older child is playing with their Lego you'll have a house full of Lego and I hope its right. So some of those little tiny is string is very small If the younger childs gets a hold could have a disaster. So making sure all the toys are a properly carried away and are not a being used by the say the younger child who shouldn't have them, with children at this age two they get faster, right they want to be normal way they like their bikes that strikes the roller blades their skate boards, they can get a way from us more quickly. So again the supervision traffic becomes a big issue, as they get older and of course proper use of the protected devices. The knee pads the elbow pads are fantastic hits the helmet. Melanie Raposo: Right Maureen Mcllveen: And if for any reason they did have an unfortunate crash, say off their skate board, if he is not upon his feet right away, I would like to know why, I don't want any one grabbing him unnecessarily picking him up, in natural lone like feel, right we would rather keep him there lets check it out, we leave the helmet on. Yes so if its anything that might involved and I don't want to call usually we want the helmet on. Melanie Raposo: Okay Maureen Mcllveen: They have lots more practiced that we do, at deciding whether helmet should be taken off or not. Melanie Raposo: Okay Maureen Mcllveen: And even with the bicycle helmet I can still checking is he waking up, is he responding, is he breathing, I can still check those things.
