Melanie Raposo: Hi everybody I'm Melanie Raposo and welcome to the pregnancy show, Today we were talking about toddler accident prevention and what do you think do at child proof your home. What are some accident prevention tips that you can provide for infants. Maureen Mcllveen: Thanks before infants. Well we go back to certainly the sleeping environment again, they crib the play anywhere the baby might be spending time. The changes that have happened over the years for example of the position where we used to put baby down for sleep. We used to put baby down almost face down position there was a lot of worry about them, revert containing their -- seems that lesser than issue than it was once thought, but they it appeared through the research that it was a concern that a sheet for example anything could touch the baby's face, it could stimulate what's called the diving reflex, so when we dive into water we automatically start breathing whether we realize it or not, could be stimulating some infants if they start breathing heart will advance to continue and then dead now with sudden infant death syndrome does of course that will be a factor that will not be the only factor with SIDS certainly but they thought it was one factor. So now we have gone back to putting babies on their back to sleep. And the incident of SIDS apparently in North America has some what dropped, safety in the trip, no puffy blankets quills or anything that they could get over the face and at the stage you may not have the strengths to be able to get it off, no toys no teddy bear, no stuffed animals, nothing with any lose parts also, even bumper pads are being of course questioned concern with the baby could get in between the pad and rails and get trapped right now pillow so all of those are kinds of safety precautions. Caution with baby in the back of the car, baby in the car seat and of course the back of the vehicle with the dry cleaning bag hanging by disastrous right and issue for smothering or suffocation right, no hanging anything around the baby's neck, if anyone uses the pacifier will pacifier on ribbons anything like that strings that could also cause strangulation no dangling blind cords in the baby's crib or play area also risk for strangulation, safety of course nothing that could get a hold of and pull on to themselves, imagine that baby in the high chair for example are getting again a baby aside the older baby who could reach over and grabs something and pull it on to themselves are knock themselves over right. So those are all concerns as they start to crawl depending on the age complete and total baby preferring at your home and its good to keep in mind you can have the most child proofed environment in the world but if someone comes in who doesn't know the routine leaves the cover door open, leaves the purse lying open in the floor, for a toddler for example to get into could have a disaster.
