How to Prevent Asthma Attacks Rebecca: Hi! My name is Rebecca and I am from Porterville and my question is how can I prevent asthma attacks? Stacy Higgins: Rebecca, the best way to avoid asthma attacks is to really to know your own triggers and to try and avoid those triggers. Some of the most common triggers include tobacco smoke. So if you smoke, to quit smoking or avoiding people who do smoke. Pollution. So, if you know that there is a high pollution level, try to stay inside. Pollen. So, watching the weather reports to see what the pollen levels are and if they are high pollen levels, staying inside early in the morning keeping the windows closed and using air-conditioning if possible. Things within the home that can trigger an asthma attack include insects, so commonly cockroaches so if there are cockroaches at home try to get rid of them with either traps or sprays. Also, dust mites are very common so using casings around the mattress, a pillow and your box spring to avoid dust mites, washing your linens in very hot water once a week is also important. Finally, if you find that your asthma is triggered by exercise, using a short acting inhaler prior to exercise can help to reduce that. If after doing all of these behavioral changes you are still having frequent asthma attacks more than once or twice per week, talk to your healthcare provider about getting put on some other inhalers that will help to reduce the number of attacks that you are having.
