Doctor Lori A. Carillo Hi, my name is Lori Carrillo. I am a board-certified obstetrician/gynecologist here in Mesa, Arizona, an East Valley suburb of Phoenix. I was trained downtown at the joint program between Maricopa Medical Center and Saint Joseph’s Medical Center. I have been practicing in the East Valley for the last five years and I am affiliated currently with Banner Desert Medical Center. I specialize in a full breadth of obstetrics and gynecology taking care of patients from late childhood through menopause. I take care of all forms of pregnancy, low-risk, high-risk, twin pregnancies and also specialized in minimally invasive advanced laparoscopic surgery involving da Vinci robotics. Because we don’t completely control whether a pregnancy is a good pregnancy, we can’t completely control whether or not we are successful when we conceive. However, there are certain well-established facts regarding pregnancy and optimizing outcomes. Number one is to make sure that you are taking a prenatal vitamin with folic acid for a minimum of three months before conception. This has been well demonstrated to decrease the rate of birth defects and because birth defects are associated with miscarriage and later pregnancy loss that’s one thing that all women can do. Another thing that women can do is look at their lifestyle. Certain things we can’t control that increase our risk for pregnancy loss such as our age. The older we get the higher chance we will experience a miscarriage, but certain lifestyle factors, making sure that we are not significantly overweight will decrease our rate of pregnancy loss. Making sure that we are not significantly underweight will decrease our pregnancy loss. And also eliminating certain lifestyle habits we know we shouldn’t be doing like smoking, will dramatically decrease the rate of pregnancy loss.
