Toddler's first dental appointment. Kimberley Clayton Blaine: Can you really make your child excited about going to the dentist? The visit should be as comfortable as possible. Your child should be encouraged to look forward to seeing the dentist. Here are some things you can do to help make your child's first dental appointment an easy one. Call the office in advance to see what their procedures are. Do they let children under 18 months sit on mummy's lap. Do they give a sticker or a prize afterward or do they have a DVD cartoon playing on their celling. Let your child know that you visit the dentist and everybody goes to the dentist. Tell them that the dentist will lean you back in a cool movable chair, counting your teeth, show you how to clean them, give you a brand new toothbrush, and maybe even a sticker. Tell your child there will be fun things to read or play with in the waiting room. Tell them that some dentists offer sunglasses, so that you won't have to look at the bright lights. You can even play dentist at home to encourage them to view dental appointments as fun and exciting. If parents remain upbeat and showy while taking their toddler to the dentist, chances are their child will adopt the same attitude.
