Kenda: Hi! My name is Kenda, I'm from Commerce City, Colorado. I'm a first-time mom, trying to potty-train my child, what steps do I need to take to train her properly? Shari Barkin: Hi! Kenda, thanks for your question, a lot of parents have exactly this question even if they are experienced. The main things to do when you are potty-training your child, first of all get your child a small potty, put it in a very easily accessible place and then let them watch you go to the bathroom. Now the thing about potty training is it's very much like a light switch. So you want to set the stage, you want to make sure that your children see you going to the potty, they are invited to go to the potty as well, and encourage them gently. They'll follow along, and when they are ready that means Fine motor movement as well as Gross motor movement being able to pull their pants down and pull their pants up then they'll be ready to go.
