Melanie Raposo: Hi everybody I'm Melanie Raposo and welcome to the pregnancy show, did you know that choking is the number one cause of death among infants while today we are showing you some step by step techniques on what to do if your baby is choking. Now what if the infant is choking, what do we do then? Maureen Mcllveen: Right, absolutely and this is a very common question certainly form new parent classes. I am going to scoop up my baby here. And I refused to use my owns sons name in these example because its just too horrible to be even think about right so, off course I am going to pretend this is someone's else baby family party, we are having a lovely time, may be been giving baby her snack right she starts coughing, naturally I am going to take away what ever I was feeding here, I might incline forward and stroke the batches gentle comforting things reassuring no big intervention is needed right now, what if it gets worse. Baby can't cough, she can't cry, imagine an older person right now who couldn't speak to you, so I need to step in, there is an issue of consent but if the parent is not here right now or the guardian I'm assume to be the responsible person. I am going to support the baby's head, so if you notice I take a v shaped hand and I support the head, I don't cover the face, I don't grab the throat and I am going to grip baby between by my forearm and my chest and bring baby into a head down position. That's right and that looks good okay, we have got the head down okay. We are going to take the heel of the hand upon baby's back and we are going to give baby five back blows, one two three four five and anyone who things oh know why are we hitting baby really this is about the only example of when you would we are going to support between the arms, roll her face towards the ceiling good grip bring her nice and close okay that's right nice position there, head down you are holding baby like a football right and we are going to take the finger tips and again imagine that the line between the nipples vertical fingers we are going to squeeze baby one, two, three, four, five you will notice this is a same location I have already used for baby CPR lets try it again. Let's support, grip, rule we call this baby sandwich bring her or him close, five back blows. One, tow, three, four, five support roll it again and bring nice and close using your legs or laps is really advisable here and we squeeze the chest, one two three four five good pressure, I say treat baby like ketchup bottle if they are joking right. We smack the ketchup bottle, we squeeze the ketchup bottle until it works or it doesn't if it works the objects comes out, of course we are going to letting parent or guardian know right away. This baby needs immediate medical attention she has to be checked out for complications, right any damage or bruising from the work we have been doing trauma to her airway, right friction swelling will result quickly what if the aspiration happens as it's called. She gets a part of her in her lung it could set for things like phonomania later, so we need to get it chucked out right away, that's the good news. The bad news is what if it didn't work?
