Dawne: I'm Dawne from Buffalo, New York, and I have a question. My toddler has started bitting people when he is angry. How do I get him to stop? Shari Barkin: Dawne, this problem of bitting for toddlers is a common, and it comes from feeling really frustrated but being pre-verbal, not being able to express yourself with your words. So children when they are pre-verbal and young like this, will strike out, they will hit, they will push, they will even bite. If you understand the root of the problem, which is your child wants to tell you something, and not be able to teach them other ways to express themselves. So for example, we know to teach children baby sign language, allows them to tell you what it is that they are thinking, and this cuts down on aggression such as bitting.
