How to Know You're Lifting Too Much Weight Realquestions Bob Xenia, Ohio My name is Bob I’m from Xenia, Ohio. I would like to know how much weight is too much for an average person to lift and at what point am I risking back injury? Rebecca Demorest, M.D. Hospital For Special Surgery So bob different people are going to be able to lift different amounts of weight so it’s difficult for me to give you a straight forward answer for your self. However, when lifting weights you should make sure that you’re keeping perfect form. If you’re back is arching in a certain way or you’re not standing in mutual alignment that’s one sign that you may be lifting too much and that you can hurt your back. Your back should be straight and it shouldn’t be arched and so having someone such as a partner who can train with you or someone in the gym who can take a look at you or using the mirrors that are in the gym to help asses your structure and how your standing and how you’re sitting when you’re doing the weight is probably the most useful way to secure that you’re not going to be lifting too much. Obviously if you’re straining to try to lift something it hurts a lot or you can’t control the weights appropriately then that’s another sign that you’re lifting too much weight. So for each person that’s a little bit different depending on how big they are, they’re body structure how much weight lifting that they’ve done in the past but that’s probably the best advice that I can give you.
