Rebecca Fox: The ball doesn’t have to drop in Time Square for people to make resolutions especially when it comes to improving their health but keeping resolutions is rare. Here to talk about making and keeping and effective health Resolutions for the New Year is family practice physician Dr. Thaddeus Bell. And Dr. Bell thanks again for being here. Dr. Thaddeus Bell: Thank you. Rebecca Fox: I’m just going to admit I’ve made a number of resolutions that I am not capped so what is the secret of keeping those resolutions? Dr. Thaddeus Bell: You know the problem that I see that people make believe make these resolutions they make resolutions which they cannot keep right from the job. So I think it’s easier to make resolutions that are very, very small, very, very tiny ones so that your chances of being successful is very, very great. And once you experience a lot of very, very successful ones then you can begin to make the resolution more difficult but experiencing success I would say make very, very small resolution don’t tell it by once when we will fit the balance to sheet. Just say you know I’m going to try to lose three pounds in January and when January up in and January will take another look at it but don’t make the most horrendous resolutions that you know you’re not going to make and you are setting yourself up for failure right from the very beginning. So that will be my recommendation. Don’t make gigantic resolutions that you never than successful are passing at no point in time in your life. Rebecca Fox: I’m going to approach it differently now so I’ve heard conflicting advice should you tell people you’re making a resolution or should you keep it quiet. Dr. Thaddeus Bell Well I think there are pros and cons on both sides. I think then you keep it quiet certainly nobody has no if you tell. If you make it public it puts a little added pressure on you to work hard at being successful in making that resolution a reality. I always make personal resolutions that I don’t tell anybody about and 99% of the time when I do that I'm pretty successful but then I see patients who come in like I’m going to lose 50 pounds this year and add in of six months. Nothing has happened so you have to remind them and always try to bring them back to reality. Let me just have you lose three pounds in the month of January and then when you struggle then we will set another goal for you and then you try to reach this little small goals and before you know it you have done a lot of good things. These little tiny things have ended up being something significant. Rebecca Fox: So set realistic expectations. Dr. Thaddeus Bell: Realistic expectation is my recommendation. Rebecca Fox: Dr. Bell, thank you so much for this advice. Dr. Thaddeus Bell: Thank you, Rebecca. Rebecca Fox: And remember you if you don’t follow your resolution you can try again, you don’t have to wait until New Year’s to make a new one.
