In this video, SafetyBeltSafe U.S.A. Executive Director Stephanie Tombrello shows you how to properly install your baby's car seat in order to ensure maximum safety in the car.
Hello I am Stephanie Tombrello, Executive Director SafetyBeltSafe U.S.A. We are talking about how to transport our youngest passengers safely in the car. Now, I am going to show you how to install an infant only seat, for an infant or small baby. The first thing you want to make sure is that you have chosen the right seat for your child. This particular infant only seat, is certified up to 30 pounds. However, most of them are certified to 22 pounds, so check the seat to be sure that it fits your child. This particular seat can be installed with or without the detached base, most parents seem to like having a separate base that can be left in the car. The base can be installed either with the shoulder-lap belt, the lap belt or the latch connections. Today we are going to install it with the latch connections. I am testing it by putting my hands near the path, which either dwelled or the latch attachments would go, see if it moves more than a inch to the sides or in front of the car. Now, I look at the base to see if the indicator shows that we have it at the proper angle for baby, particularly a new born or it's very important that the child to be at a 45 degree angle. Now, I am putting the shell in I want to make sure that I heard that click, so that I know that it's firmly attached. One always checks the instructions to make sure whether the handle should be up, back or down low for riding in the car. Next, I want to make sure that I am ready to adjust the harness system. This particular system has three levels, and I want it at or below shoulder level on the infant that I am transporting. There are three levels for the harness system, and you will use the slots at or below shoulder level on the baby. If I had the baby in here, I probably would have put the shell in first and attached the harness. Now, we have in there tightly; we have heard that it clicks properly. You can see from the back where the harness is coming thorough from the same level for both harness straps. Every once in a while someone doesn't put the harness all the way through or puts it in two different levels being in a hurry. So now we have the child in the car seat. Next, we are going to show you how to put your baby in the car seat.
