How to Heat Breast Milk Brittany: Hi I’m Brittany deVols form Corona, California and my question is, what’s the best and healthiest way to warm refrigerated breast milk? Stephen Turner: Well Brittany, I’ve been dealing with this myself as a father of twin boys, my wife has been pumping a lot of breast milk so we’ve been dealing with this quite a bit lately. There are number of ways to heat cold breast milk. The most important thing I want to emphasize is that do not put it in the microwave. If you microwave it, you can get hot spots and the child can actually get burns. So there are bottle warmers that you can use, you put in a small amount of water, you put the bottle in it and it actually boils the water and heats up the bottle or you can actually heat up your water, a cup of water yourself for example in the microwave and then take it out of the microwave and put the bottle in to that cup of warm water and usually that’s all you need. Make sure that you test the temperature of the breast milk before you feed your child.
