How can I ensure copyright protection on my work? Jim Frey: One way of ensuring it forever and a day is once you’ve completed a manuscript you can do what's described in the industry as a Poor Man's Copyright. Make a copy of the manuscript, put it in a self-addressed, stamped envelope and mail it back to yourself and do not open it and hold that forever because by having the postage cancelled and unsealed envelope with your manuscript, that work belongs to you. If you’re dealing with established, reputable publishing companies, your copyright will be secured. As you’ve seen in the previous graphics, the registration of the copyright with the Library of Congress is done by most reputable publishing firms.
