Dr. Adamson shares What women can do now that will help ensure they can Have a baby in the future.
Transcript
That’s a really good question because many, many women say, “I know I want to have children but just not yet. What types of things should I be doing?” And there are actually some pretty good answers to that and some things that every woman can do to help protect their fertility and their chance to have a healthy baby in the future. These include obviously having a good healthy diet, not weighing too much or too little, having appropriate amount of exercise one to two hours a week of good aerobic exercise. It’s important not to smoke, not to drink too much, to practice safe sex and certainly, it’s also very important not to wait too long because fertility goes down with age. And so, it’s very important for the woman and her partner to discuss whether or not they want to have children and if they do, at what point in their life, and just to remember that there’s never really a perfect time to have a baby. So it’s important to put the baby into the planning and generally speaking, and this is a biologic, not a socioeconomic or political comment, the female body is best prepared for pregnancy and has the best chances between the ages of about 25 to age 35 with still pretty good chances up to age 40. But after that, the chance for pregnancy really does start to go down. Even though many women can get pregnant in their early 40s, the rate of infertility is much, much higher.
